Walking in the Shadow of Death: The Scapegoating of Jews in Medieval Plague Times
From 1346 to 1353, the Black Death ravaged much of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Fearing for their lives, communities were quick to turn on the marginalized among them, using them as scapegoats against the pandemic. Jewish communities in particular were often blamed, and rumours spread that linked the cause of the plague to Jews. This lead to monstrous folklore, unflattering artistic depictions, and, in extreme cases, mass executions. This class will provide an overview of the unique form of antisemitism that arose during this medieval plague outbreak, and how its affects were seen in Jewish communities in Europe in the aftermath.
Note: This class will address topics of historical racial and religious persecution, violence, and the Black Death and other medieval pandemics, and may contain material unsuitable for younger students. |

Rapier Participation and Recognition Data Project Outbrief
Outbrief of the data project looking at rapier fighter participation over events in 2024 & 2025 and OP databases to look at trends on event attendance, award statistics and other metrics by region, gender and rank.
Looking at this data helps us get to a shared understanding of the participation and recognition of folks in rapier in Atlantia both current and historically. We can use this as a basis to identify where there may be areas we can learn from and where we can focus on improving. This will remain at a big picture level and will not get into any individual data.
At the end of the class we will have an open discussion on ways to improve our overall rapier game, community, and follow up areas of investigation. |

Making a Coronet Pattern: For metal, leather or other materials
A 1-hour, hands-on class on how to calculate and draw the pattern (outline) of a 6-point, straight-sided coronet. This pattern works for a variety of materials: metal, leather, fabric, etc. After this tutorial you will be able to calculate and draw for different head sizes and number of points (ex. 4-points, etc.).
Needed Materials: 3 sheets of graph paper, 4 squares per inch (each square is 1/4 in); tape; pencils; eraser; a 12-inch straight edge ruler; a compass from a geometry set (the one that holds a pencil or lead so it draws a circle)
Prepare 1-sheet in landscape position, draw a vertical (Y-axis) and horizontal (X-axis) line that share the same 0-inch coordinate, and mark each 1-inch mark along both arms. |

The story of Plato's lost city of Atlantis may have roots in a real historical event. Modern archaeological finds suggest the ruins of Akrotiri on the Mediterranean island of Santorini may be ruins of the real Atlantis. This class will share historical and archaeological evidence about the lost city of Atlantis and pictures from my own visit to the ruins of Akrotiri. Chiquart: Feeding a Court, Commanding a Kitchen
Master Chiquart Amiczo was the Duke of Savoy's head cook, and his 1420 treatise Du fait de cuisine makes it clear that he knew exactly how good he was at it. Equal parts technical manual and professional brag book, it's one of the most vivid documents of medieval culinary ambition we have. This class examines what Chiquart tells us about cooking, kitchen management, and what it meant to feed a ducal court. |

Intro to Irish Syllabic Poetry
Irish syllabic poetry, also known in its later form as Dán díreach, is the name given to syllabic poetry in the Irish language as written by monastic poets from the eighth century on, and later by professional poets in Ireland and Gaelic Scotland.
Monastic lyrics appear from around the eighth century on, inspired by love of Nature, love of solitude and love of the Divine. Secular poetry of this sort was mostly used for praise poetry and elegy. There are a comparatively small number of poems of a personal or satirical nature.
In this class we will cover one set of rules in this poetry style, read an example or two, and then you'll write a quatrain of your own in class following as many rules as you can! |

The Origins of the Vampire in Medieval Europe
Monsters that come back from the dead to hunt the living can be interpreted as an embodiment of medieval fears of pestilence and decay. From the vrykolakas of Greece to the draugr of the Norse, vampiric creatures were part of the popular conscious long before the sensationalized accounts of the 1700s caused the emergence of an aristocratic form of the vampire myth. In this class, students will learn about medieval folklore and the beginning of what we would now consider vampire mythology, while paying close attention to the socio-cultural context that allowed for these stories to flourish.
Note: This class will address topics of historical racial and religious persecution, violence, plagues, and death, and may contain material unsuitable for younger students. |
