Allusive Armory and Canting
Heralds don't make puns, they cant!
Some people want their armory to describe their interests, their prowess, and sometimes their persona story. But a lot of heraldry out there is simply a visual play on an individual's name or alludes to the person's name in an indirect way. We'll show you some obvious examples from Western Europe and from the SCA. Some of these remain amusing today, others don't stand the test of time. |

Feast Stewarding Tips By A Dummy: Lessons I Learned My First Time Running A Feast
You've redacted Period recipes. You've helped chop vegetables and roll dough in a variety of SCA Feast kitchens. You've contributed to day boards and hospitality tables. You feel ready to spearhead your first SCA Feast and your bid just got accepted. Now what?
A class full of practical instructions and issues to consider for aspiring, novice, or rusty Feast Stewards looking to successfully execute one of the most logistically challenging undertakings at any SCA event. Taught by the Feast Steward from Ymir 51. |

Tools for Research: Thought Maps, Outlines, and Rubrics
Do you love making art but struggle with or feel intimidated by writing it down? Do you struggle with staying organized while writing, or get frustrated because you know you have a source but can't remember it? Do you kick yourself when reading your feedback, because you forgot to bring something up, but you know that you know it? Well, me too. This class will show you the tools that I use to stay organized with my research, and how I check myself to make sure I haven't forgotten anything. I will walk you through my process for using different research tools and why these three help me and my brand of neurodiversity the most. |

Make an Atlatl Dart
The atlatl or spear throwing stick was used around the world for thousands of years prior to the invention of the bow and arrow, and its use continued during the conquest of Mexico and into the modern era in Australia. Everything one needs to make atlatls and the darts they throw can be found growing in Atlantia. In this class I will combine Forestry and Archery with a focus on using bamboo shafts with turkey feather fletching and modern arrow points. I'll show some examples of darts made using nearly period materials and construction, then teach attendees how to process and straighten shafts and apply feathers and points using slightly updated methods to make their own atlatl dart that they can use on the SCA archery range. Attendees may find it helpful to bring a small pocketknife. $8 fee covers class materials. |

Latin Poetry For Absolute Beginners Who Don't Speak Latin
This is a repeat of the same class as I taught at a previous University.
Latin is a beautiful but intimidating language. Together we will translate one section of the Aeneid, as a team, with access to dictionaries and Google. You will not walk away speaking Latin, but you'll get an idea of some of what might be going on behind the curtain when you read poetry in translation and some of the ambiguity and difficult decisions that translators tackle. I have multiple sections of the Aeneid prepared to choose from, but the whole class must choose one poem which we will work on together as a team. Aimed at people with no or minimal Latin experience.
The class has been made 2 hours instead of 1, in response to feedback from previous classes. Hopefully we will have time to answer questions about the context of the piece as well as actually get through some translation! |

Oh Ye of Little Faith: The Trial by Ordeal in Medieval Europe
Come discover the archaic practice of the Ordeal at its height. The Trial By Ordeal was a judicial practice whereby the accused could demonstrate their innocence or the validity of a legal claim by undertaking a painful (and sometimes potentially fatal) act to demonstrate the worthiness of their cause. This class will cover a brief history of the practice, common and uncommon varieties of the Ordeal, and why it began to fall out of favor in medieval Europe. |

The Medieval Cook's Palette: Color, Spectacle and Meaning
Medieval food has a reputation for being brown that its cooks would be appalled by. Color in food was intentional, technically demanding, and meaningful: part symbol, part humoral theory, part social display. Most importantly, medieval diners were meant to eat with their eyes. This class examines it all: what specific colors meant, why cooks sought them, and the ingredients and techniques used to produce dazzling feasts. |

The Ethics of Commentary and Feedback
The Pennsic 52 A&S War Point showcased 39 Artisans and utilized the expertise of over 60 Judges from 11 kingdoms across the Knowne Worlde, some of which do not have cultures of competition. A training session was developed by the organizers from the East, Atlantia, and the Mid to teach folks how to use the rubric as an evaluation tool, and what the expectations for the quality of feedback were. This class is an adaptation of that training session and will cover the mechanics of what good feedback and commentary looks like, both in and outside of competition spaces. **Open to all skill levels and experiences** |

Arrows are one of the most important parts of an archer’s equipment. Having an understanding of the aspects of a good arrow will go a long way in improving your overall archery enjoyment and skill. Arrows should be matched to the archer and to the bow.
This class will provide an overview of the process for making wooden arrows for target archery in the SCA. Additionally, we will review the materials, tools and various stains, paints and sealers needed. Particular emphasis will be placed on straightening arrows, which can be one of the most challenging aspects of the process. A list of resources will be provided for purchasing the the materials and tools as well suppliers who sell ready made arrows. This class will also be relevant for anyone interested in repairing, decorating, or modifying their arrows. |

We'll start with a brief history of the Insular Majuscule script, and then take time to see how the shapes and letters are formed in a live demonstration. After that, we will learn the basics of Celtic Knotwork design, in all of its calculated under-over glory, and again take time to see how simple lines turn into elegant designs in a live demonstration. Handouts will be virtually provided, and students are encouraged to follow along with the live demonstrations using their own supplies. |

Painting your Pavilion
Painted medieval pavilions were a common and decorative sight, featured in numerous historical paintings and illuminated manuscripts from the 13th to 15th centuries, showcasing elaborate designs, stripes, and coats of arms on colorful canvases. You too can have a decorative pavilion. Join us for a discussion where we will present examples of painted pavilions from period references as well as share our experiences and examples of painting. The class will cover process and materials used. |

Who Told You That You Can't Sing? (They Were Wrong!)
This class will address some of the things that get in the way of doing one of the most fun things around: singing!
These blocks can include:
- Am I a good enough singer to sing in front of other people? (spoiler: yes!)
- How do I find songs that are good for my voice?
- Where are some places in the SCA that I can sing, either by myself, or with others? |
