What is Cultura? Which year is Tempore? Who can enter Pentathlon? What does all this mean? Join Magistra Beatriz, the new Kingdom Competitions Deputy, to learn about the yearly cycle of competitions in the Kingdom of Atlantia. From the timing of Tempore to the finer points of Pentathlon, this class will give you a solid understanding of the 6 major competitions and how you too can enter!

This class will discuss how to improve your next event by using the Add One, Improve One concept. This is a process that teaches you how to add a new element to your event while also improving an existing element from a previous event. This is a refinement tool which allows for new ideas without completely starting over from scratch every single time. Note: Students are requested to bring paper and pens or pencils.

With the advent of the printing press came the first tabloids. The broadsides were full of lurid tales of murder, adultery, and deviance which captivated the Elizabethans. This fascination with crime expressed itself in emergent forms of art and entertainment, including morbid ballads and "ripped from the broadsides" dramas on the Elizabethan stage.

The technology of the oil lamp has been in use since the Neolithic. Once the distillation of alcohol was discovered, likely prior to the 1300s, alcohol also was used to fuel similar lamps that became known as spirit lamps. By the 1500s, the use of such lamps had spread to alchemists in Europe, and they remain in use even today for small-scale heating of materials in the laboratory, in jewelry work, and in many other related arts. In this session I'll talk briefly about the history of their use and will demonstrate how to make and use a spirit lamp for your medieval A&S projects.

Food is a part of the SCA experience for much more than just feasts. This will visually go over some possible situations or celebrations that include food. Also included is possible foods, feast gear & personal feast kit, best practices, and things to consider.

There have been some really great articles on archeological finds. I have found a few new sources to share including a recently published book on jewelry. Come learn of the history of beadwork and its techniques. Explore new source. This class includes an update on the origins and techniques of faceted beads and some of the lore of the period.

NO MATH REQUIRED FOR THIS CLASS! This is a class that explores the scandalous history of the cubic formula. The quest to solve cubic equations led to duels, betrayals — and modern mathematics. In the 16th century, algebraic equations were still expressed rhetorically — in words, not symbols — and all coefficients had to be nonnegative, since mathematicians did not recognize negative numbers as legitimate. Students are NOT expected to do any math in this class! This is an informative lecture designed to help foster the appreciation for historical mathematics.

Curious to learn about criminal canines, lawbreaking locusts, and other farmyard felons? In Medieval Europe, humans were not the only creatures subject to prosecution by secular and ecclesiastical authorities. There are documented cases of animals being put on trial in secular courts for criminal offenses or being censured by the church in religious courts! In this class we will explore this remarkable phenomena by discussing the differences between civil (secular) and canon (religious) trials of animals, as well as actual cases brought against non-human offenders.

This is a class to help any MOL run and authorize our populace on the youth and Equestrian fields.

Join Mistress Marguerite as we go through her approach to writing documentation that's enjoyable to read and effectively reflects and represents the work you've put into your art.

Our ideas of harems are centered around seclusion and passivity. But how accurate is that for 8th to 10th century Persia? Where do women with power and money fit into that idea? Join me to learn how wrong my assumptions were. And learn about the lives of some of the women of the palace.

Medieval manuscripts offer a glimpse into hundreds of years of clothing, furniture, and daily life for any SCA participant wanting to upgrade their presence. This class will discuss naming conventions(or the lack of), searching for manuscripts online, and a brief tutorial of using some of the major online sources. There is a focus on digital sources and documenting them. Also included is a handout with about 30 manuscript links from 700-1600.

Educating women served many purposes in SCA period. This class will look at one tool for this- commonplace books and how those varied between men and women, particularly England and Spain. This class will be recorded.

I will demonstrate my process of painting on fabric: working with modern acrylic craft paint and textile medium. The process is done primarily with a paint brush, but can be used for all forms of painting on fabric.
