Dukes & Duchesses, Knights & Barons, and What on Earth is a Marquess?!
From the moment of its inception, the Society for Creative Anachronism has strived to authentically recreate the arts, sciences, combat, and courtesy of various times all long gone by. In this pursuit, a vast array of pageantry has emerged across the Known World - with a sea of royals and nobles in pointy hats presiding over it all. But have you ever stopped to think why a knight would stand before one baron and behind another? Or why a master artisan holds a higher station than someone with a coronet on their head? In this class, we will explore the social structures of surrounding the nobility of the European Medieval and Renaissance eras, its counterparts in the Society, and how the two evolved into the modern systems we have today to honor those bygone times. This class will be recorded.

Heka: An Introduction to Egyptian Magic
Magic in medieval Europe was primarily a service industry, used in all areas of life, from healing the sick to finding a companion and prevailing in law suits. Medieval magic practices developed from a combination of local traditions and Greco-Roman practices. But from where did the Greeks and the Romans derive their magic traditions? The Romans said they got their magic from the Greeks and the Greeks claimed it was from the Babylonians and the Persians, but both those cultures admitted they had learned from the Egyptians. This class will introduce you to Egyptian magical practices and traditions so you can see from where European practices came.

Beneath the Veil - tips and tricks for making headwear stick!
We've all struggled with slippy headwear. From Pallu to Stola, Hijab to Wimple. But for most personas, our outfit is incomplete with a bare head. This class is focused on draped cloth headcoverings, not hats.
Bring your veils, underpinnings, and questions such as:
How did these stay on in period?
What tools can help us acheive and maintain these looks without the help of stylists and servants?
Can veils help me cover non-period hair?
Most styles discussed will be historically female, however participants and personas of all gender identities are encouraged to participate! Please bring a rectangular piece of fabric at least 1.5 yards in length and 2 feet wide.
Vani ka Bhediya (mka Mandy Haecker) began studying headcovering practices in 2014. Over the years, she has spent several months covering her hair in public, done LARP combat in a turban, and worn headwraps in response to medical hair loss. This is her first class teaching in the SCA! |

Apothecary: Wine as Medicine
Wine has a long history of being used as medicine. In Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean, wine was used both as a balance to the humors as well as a carrier for other spices and herbs for curative purposes. We'll take a look at sources such as Hippocrates and the Salerno Health Regime and take a look at various recipes for hippocras and other "medicinal" wine based cures. Basic knowledge of humoral theory is recommended but not required.

Event Planning with Project Management
Organizing an event in the SCA includes a range of activities, depending on the event itself - a local event? a kingdom event? one-day? camping? known-world event? Each of these types of events has unique requirements, and managing multiple moving parts can be stressful for an event steward. Project management places an emphasis on planning and communications, and the use of tool templates to manage multiple aspects of an event. This class introduces the application of project management principles to support team-based event planning, and service development for newer stewards. Join us, as we discuss what project management is, and how we can use it to improve planning events and managing event staff. This class will not be recorded. |

Elements of Byzantium
When we say a piece of art is "Byzantine", what does that mean? The empire had an incredibly broad reach, and lasted for well over a millennium, so covering everything would be too much for a short class. Instead, we'll filter its art through the lens of a scribe.
By narrowing our scope, we can identify distinctive—and useful—features, witness how those features are picked up elsewhere, and trace how various distinguishing elements evolve over time.
At the end of the class, you'll have the tools to improve your scrollwork by better understanding what you're seeing—not only the features of Byzantine art itself, but also how it grew into later styles in the future, and how it evolved from styles which had come before. Conflict Resolution for SCA Relationships
Conflict is a fact of life, even in the SCA. It can be between combatants on the field, members of an event staff or royal staff, SCA group officers, a peer and a dependent, or just between two SCAdians who just don't get along, once conflict happens, it can be resolved by the people involved, or an impartial party, but in each case, there are specific techniques and methods that can be used to help find resolution.
In this class, we will discuss these specific methodologies and techniques. This is not just a lecture class; attendees will be requested to participate in exercises and scenarios, some of which will be asked of the participants. That means that we'd like you to keep your cameras on for interaction. Handout will be provided via Google Docs.

Drafting a Kirtle Skirt from Alcega's Pattern Book
This class will start with a quick overview of women's fashion in the later 16c Spain, the defining characteristics of Spanish women's clothing and how some of those characteristics show up in the various vasquina (kirtle) patterns in Juan de Alcega's 'Libro de Geometria, Pratica, y Traca,' published in 1580 and 1589. The focus of this class will be demonstrating a skirt draft based on the ankle-length vasquina pattern (f.71v in 1580; f.60 in 1589), and briefly discussing how this technique could be modified for Alcega's other skirt patterns. My pattern draft utilizes generalized measurements for the waist and skirt length, so can be tailored for individual needs.
Anyone wanting to draft along with me needs:
- A string/straightedge/measuring tape the total length of your waist measurement plus desired skirt length.
- Two pieces of paper (or other surfaces), each the length of your string (above) and the width of your waist measure, plus a couple extra inches each dimension.
- Pencil, pen or surface-appropriate marking implement
- Straight-edge (optional)
My skirt drafts will be at 1/2.54 scale, by taking my measurements in inches and then using those measurements in centimeters, without converting units (ie, 30" waist becomes 30 cm, 40" length becomes 40 cm).

What were authors of fiction thinking of when they mentioned the non-addictive, sickly sweet, "milk of the poppy"? What poison could make a victim's hair fall out? |

The Newcomer's Roundtable: From a Newcomer's Perspective
The SCA offers a wide variety of resources for the newcomer. With all these wonderful offerings it can still be daunting to navigate the fantastic world of the SCA. Join us as we discuss the ins and outs, and ups and downs of this brave new (old) world all offered from the unique perspective of a newcomer who has been playing in the SCA for a little more than two years. Along the way we'll offer some tried and true tips for getting involved with your local group both virtually and in-person, how to pursue researching your area(s) of interest, where to find (or how to construct) garb, and we'll have an open discussion to answer questions and share our stories as newcomers. |

Fun in the woods with friends- how to start a Saunter/local Forestry Guild Group
Feeling lonely in your Barony or Shire? Not sure how to get things going? This class will "walk" you through the practical steps to getting a small group going in your local area for garb walks, picnics, overnighters and skills shares. We will cover outreach, event planning, and accessibility, as well as lessons learned from nearly three years running the Stierbach Saunterers in Northern Atlantia. We will also talk about how to start a Baronial Forest, which is what can naturally grow from such sauntering groups, and what the Kingdom of Atlantia Royal Forestry Guild requires to charter such local groups. It's not as hard as you think, and it's a lot of fun. We get out and live in our gear and garb in a way that many in the Society never get to experience. Class WILL be recorded.

"Anglo-Saxon" Melting Pot
(REVISED!) Unlike the story too often told, the art of Early Medieval England was truly that of a multiculture formed by migration, assimilation, and synthesis.
In this class we'll begin to explore regional differences across the kingdoms; trace its evolution as local styles were influenced by and combined with art from Europe (and beyond!); and delve into a few of the myriad ways that religion, politics, and culture impacted their art.
By the end, I hope you'll have a finer understanding of Early English art, as well as the kaleidoscope the period represents, so that when the time comes to create an early-period English scroll, you'll be ready. [This class will not be recorded.] |

While a melee cannot be won by a single individual, a person or small unit can change the course of the battle if used effectively. Being an effective harrier unit is more than being there and in the way. Come learn how to make and use an effective harrier unit and what is needed to be one.
This will be focused on the rapier combat side of things but many of the concepts will overlap and be applicable to armored combat melee as well.

A Modern Technique for Informing a Period Aesthetic
Learn how to use the basics of Symmetry Analysis to analyze a collection of period artworks. This method is used in a variety of academic fields to understand the aesthetic of a collection of artworks sharing a context. It has been used on art from Stone Age pottery to tilings in the Alhambra to modern financial trademarks. It has also been used to fill in gaps where portions of a piece of art have been damaged or lost over time. We will focus on frieze or strip patterns, and discuss single motifs or point patterns. More information on wallpaper and multicolor patterns can be found in the references. This technique uses some basic concepts of geometry that are now taught at the middle school level, so this class should be accessible for ages 13 and up. This class will be recorded. |

How to Press Roses (or other flowers) and Mount Them in a Frame
One way to preserve roses or other flowers is to press them flat so they can dry. Once dry, the flowers can be mounted on heavy cardstock and framed. This method of preserving botanical specimens started in the 16th century and continues to this day. I will discuss and demonstrate how to press roses using a plant press or something similar then mounting them for framing once they are dry. I will talk about where to get the tools and supplies and my successes and failures at drying roses for display.

Manipulating the Middle Ages: Racism, Nationalism, Ethnocentrism, and the Society
What do racism, nationalism, ethnocentrism, and misogyny have in common? It's the Middle Ages. Throughout modern history, individuals have sought to reinterpret the Middle Ages in order to justify these things and much more. How can this happen? Aren't facts just facts? Why does interpretation matter? As it so happens, popular media, politicians, and historians have throughout time repurposed, invented, and manipulated the Middle Ages by highlighting certain facts and downplaying or ignoring others. We within the Soceity also interpret and reinterpret various elements from this period in history. It is vital to the future of the Soceity to discuss how and why we do this in contrast and comparsion to other organizations. This class will discuss two texts in conjunction: _The Devil's Historians_ by Kaufman and Sturtevant and _Inventing the Middle Ages_ by Norman Cantor. Students need not have read these books but they will provide the framework for discussion. |

Perform Like You Mean It!
What makes a performance come alive and connect with audience? How do we go from "that was lovely" to "WOW"? While the secret behind a sparkling performance may seem mysterious, esoteric, and incomprehensible, these soft skills can be developed by any performer with time, care, and thought. However, developing these skills can be challenging, as they require complex and nuanced integration of physicality, timing, flexibility, and emotion.
To start participants on this path, this class will share immediately-employable tips and tricks as well as techniques to practice and concepts to consider. Some of what we will cover includes:
- Developing vulnerability on stage, what it looks like, how to handle it, and why it matters
- Engaging with the audience authentically by leaning into strengths
- Creating a performance that flows
- Navigating audience expectations
- Why memorization matters
This class will also apply the content to performances in languages other than Modern English, as well as persona-based and historicity-focused pieces, with an emphasis on poetry, singing, and other vocal performances.
If you are performing in other languages, a nervous performer, or simply want to take your performances to the next level, this is the class for you! |
