Youth and families are essential to the future (and present!) of the SCA. This class will discuss how to recruit and maintain families with children in your local group, and what to do with them once you have them! Children's Activities are fun and all, but there are so many things beyond that to be done to keep children (and their parents) happy, engaged, and excited about their future in the Society. Come get some pointers from a youth officer and mother, and bring your own ideas to share! (Children are welcome to attend, and will have their own quiet activity to do during class.)

"Invented by Renaissance-era French and Italian nuns, Quilling is the art of rolling paper to create decorations used for reliquaries and other religious objects. Students will learn about the history and materials used and be guided through the creation of their first piece. Materials will be provided, along with a handout."

"Ever wish you knew a quick, easy way to make a nice cord to hold your fancy new medallion? Or needed something simple but nice that you could make 50 of fairly quickly? Well, this is the class for you. This class is for those who have never tried Fingerloop Braiding before, or who tried, failed, and want to try again. Kits with pre-cut crochet thread and handouts will be available."

This class provides an overview of the evolution of early Western European polyphonic music in the centuries prior to the 16th century.

Interested in making books, but not sure what skills or tools you need to get started? This class will introduce students to the basic manual skills as well as provide a forum for discussing the tools that a new binder needs to get started. You won't learn how to make a specific type of book, but will come away with lessons that apply to a broad range of bookbinding projects.

"How did medieval craftsmen mark their work? This class will cover how medieval woodworkers and other craftsmen measured and marked their work. We will cover a wide variety of tools including knives, dividers, scribes and other specialty tools. We’ll talk about story sticks and who used them. Also discussed will be medieval aesthetics and how it applies to marking and measuring."

Learn the Single Branle, Double Branle, the first four Inns of Court dances, and historical context for easy dances, including the Carole.

Want to cook in period but don't know where to start? Your apartment doesn't have a handy open fire pit? No idea what an "eyroun" is or where to buy one? No problem! This class is a quick introduction to some of the basics of modern period cookery for the beginner.

This class will cover the very basics of handsewing, from threading a needle to making useful stitches. We will talk about selecting the right needle and thread for your project, and will learn a running stitch, back stitch, and whip stitch. Sample materials for 10. Handouts for 20.

"This class will cover SCA sumptuary customs (regalia protected by law, regalia protected by custom, and Kingdom-based differences where applicable), what the various brass hats signify, how to treat Royalty, and what to do when you're called into court. Time permitting, a mock court will be held for demonstration purposes. "

Extant shirts and shifts from the 16th century are often decorated with embroidery. We'll look at where the embroidery is used, materials, stitches, threads and then design a free form pattern in class. We'll also discuss counted work and look at source material. Class includes a handout and model booklet by Mistress Isobel Bedingfield.

Learn how to braid and tape your hair into the iconic circled braid style. Requirement: Shoulder length hair. Please bring your own comb or brush. 1 Hour, Fee: $5, Class limit: 8. "A basic overview of tools and materials for an inexpensive start in the scribal arts. Ideas for artwork sources, and guides for those interested in making awards scrolls. Hands on time to explore pen and paints. All materials provided. Handout provided with information for scribal kit including suppliers and costs."

This class discusses what distinguishes Old Norse Poetry from other poetic forms. It includes a discussion of alliteration, kennings and skaldic v. eddic verse, and basic rules for writing fornydyslag. The class is geared to adults but teenagers are also welcome.

Every guard has its weaknesses, but more importantly, everyone makes mistakes. Learn how to evaluate an opponent's guard to determine what your best path to victory will be. Please bring a rapier and a secondary weapon

Fiore di Liberi describes a system of combat for the late 1300s. Published in 1409, his manuscripts discuss a consistent set of combat principles which he applies to wrestling, dagger, swords, axes and spears. It has application to armored, rapier, cut and thrust, and even mounted combat within the SCA. This course will provide a basic introduction to Fiore's system using daggers and longswords. Current Fiore reference material will be discussed and some slow, unarmored, combat moves will be demonstrated. Students are encouraged to bring an appropriate rattan, metal, or waster longsword. The instructor will have a few extra available for use.

Poetry is abundant in period, but performing terrifies people. Why? Learn how to perform poetry without putting your audience in to a head spin, drag them into the story and leave them wanting more. Bring a piece to work on.

Exchequer 101 and 201 are required for being a warranted exchequer and deputy exchequer. This course covers the documentation needed to get started as an exchequer, what is required to hold the office and the rules and responsibilities of the office. This class is also open to anyone interested in becoming an exchequer or seneschals who want exchequer training.

"This class will guide students through the process of measuring a partner (we'll pair up in the class) to create a personalized/custom pattern for a basic tunic using the Elizabethan Smock Pattern Generator created by Drea Lead (Leed, Drea. The Elizabethan Costuming Page (http://www.elizabethancostume.net/). ©1997-2010). The tunic is suitable for basic garb in a variety of time periods and locations and is constructed nearly completely with straight seams, making it an easy yet comfortable and period appropriate option for basic beginners garb. Participants should bring 2-3 yards of plain muslin fabric *OR* the class fee to cover the cost of fabric; fabric provided for the fee will be muslin suitable for creating a re-usable pattern. If possible, participants should also bring a cloth tape measure and a pair of sharp scissors (tape measures and scissors will be shared among attendees). Participants may either bring materials noted *OR* bring the fee and use materials provided."

This class is a requirement for anyone wishing to become a Thrown Weapons Marshall in Atlantia.

Class will show students basic investigation construction, developing and establishing facts, review of the rules and appropriate use of marshallate chain for recommendations. Establishing use of external information and establishing supporting documentation.

Not the battle itself but the history leading up to it. It wasn't like William just decided to invade on a whim. Harald Hardrada, Edward the Confessor, Canute.

Learn about the development and history of embroidery, early period embroidery motifs, and the techniques necessary to recreate them. We’ll discuss several historical examples; fabrics, embroidery threads, and dyes commonly used in different regions; and how to work with period materials or approximate them where the original sources are unavailable. We’ll also discuss transferring designs to a garment, appliqueing separate embroidered pieces to garments, troubleshooting, and making beautiful embroidered garments that will hold up to camping, laundering, and fighting. "This class is for those who have mastered the basic skills of fingerloop braiding, and would like to attempt more complex patterns. Kits will be provoded with pre-cut lengths of crochet thread and handouts with several different patterns, as well as links for additional on-line resources."

Planning to go on a Pilgrimage at your local event? Have you thought about wearing a Pilgrims Bag instead of carrying a bulky basket? A Pilgrim's Bag allows your hands to be free from carrying a basket and enables you to hold other items at the same time. A Pilgrim's Bag is a great way to keep your modern items out of sight. Learn how you can make a Pilgrim's Bag using cloth or leather. Handouts given; pictures shown; and valuable life saving info to aid you on your own Pilgrimage.

This class will introduce students to period and modern techniques for shaping base and precious metals with hand tools. We'll review cutting and bending without the use of heat, tool use and care, and safety basics. It's incredibly satisfying transforming a dull, flat piece of brass into a shining, three-dimensional lacework. Learning how to do it is not the work of a day or a month, but this class will be a good start on that path.

Are you curious about how Golden Dolphin decides if a name, device or badge goes to Laurel. In this class we will look at a some of current kingdom submission and discuss if they should be sent to Laurel or if they should be returned for more.

Learn dances from "Joy and Jealousy: A Manual of 15th C Italian Balli." This class is open to dancers of all levels with all steps being taught and all dances being called. Possible dances include Gelosia, Amoroso, Rostibolio Gioioso, and Petite Vriens. Dance is Fun! Come dance and have fun!

Do you like to cook, experiment, and research possibilities? Please joi me as we review some resources, tools, utensils, and cooking techniques of pre-1000 cultures. I will focus on Anglo-Saxon culture but much can be applied to other Northern European people.

Are you interested in medieval music, but not sure if you really like it? Come to a guided listening session. We'll play representative pieces from our period, and you may find something you like. Not all period music sounds the same!

The first time I went to an event, I didn't know enough to take dishes with me for the feast. That was a long time ago, and I'm better at it now. Let me help prepare you for what to expect at different kinds of events so you're not caught short!

Lecture exploring Opus Teutonicum and German Poly-chrome embroidery produced in convents as liturgical furnishing between @1150 and 1400. We will discuss how they were produced, used, and they relate to the society of the middle ages.

A show & tell of SCA-period musical instruments, from the collection of the instructors. Assorted woodwinds & a few strings will be demonstrated, using period & traditional music. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own instruments to show off, especially brass, string, & percussion. Handouts will be available with sheet music of the tunes demonstrated.

A quick lesson in the drop shadow style shown in the Breviary of Isabella of Castille. We will be painting preprinted bookmarks, bring your own brushes and paints if you prefer.

Most fencers are told to improve their footwork with little explanation as to what good footwork means beyond "stay balanced." Not falling over is a good skill to have, but this class will focus on how to use footwork to establish and maintain advantage during a fight. Please bring a rapier and a secondary weapon

Based on the principles taught in the Intro to Fiore Di Liberi class, we will dive into Fiore's manuscript which describes a complex decision tree for dagger combat. These techniques survive in modern self defense and martial art techniques. This class will describe, demonstrate, and teach several branches of the decision tree exploring responses, counters and contra-counter moves. The student will gain an understanding of Fiore's instructional approach and the currently available reference material so that they may continue their studies outside of the class. Students may bring a dagger simulator and optional eye protection or the instructors will have a few extra available.

Break out of your shell and learn to be creative in your form of performing arts. We will be doing some interactive shenanigans to enlarge your ability to perform with less fear and more fun.

This class is intended as a primer on how to be the marshal -in-charge of an event. It assumes that the individuals taking the class are (or will become) well -grounded in their own disciplines. It is the required second class to become a marshal.

We will review an outline of the basic requirements needed for all archery shoots, and discuss the variety of ways you can customize your own shoot to maximize safety, fairness, efficiency, and most of all, fun!

This class is required of all who would enter the Marshal in Training program for armored combat. It also satisfies the requirement for refresher training.

These are from 1500 England and different from the English Country dances. A bit more challenging than the beginner ones with a few steps unique to this style. No experience necessary.

At the end of many great events is a glorious meal. Is it an art? Is it a service? How do you even begin to plan for such an undertaking? This hour is designed as an overview into many of the components that can go into planning such an endeavor.

You've been to a few events, but are looking to become more than a spectator. Here are some tips and tricks to getting more involved and staying busy during events.

The Sine Quadrant or Rubu Markahb was a device for performing mathematical calculations and determining time. This class will give the historical context for the device and provide extensive hands-on practical experience in using the various functions.

This class will cover songs from the Near & Middle East, including the lyrics, meaning, melody, maqam and rhythms that accompany them. No prior experience needed – singing is for everyone! We will also explore how these songs relate to period music. Melody players and percussionists are welcome to bring their instruments, but be aware that some of these songs include quarter-tones, not playable on many Western instruments.

Students will see examples of the use of gilding in illuminated manuscripts, sample several different sizes, and then practice gilding with patent gold leaf. Instructor asks students to bring sharp scissors and a size 0 or 1 round paint brush.

This class will go through the steps to layout a sundial, either horizontal or vertical. It will use graphic methods, so no math is required. Using the methods from this class you will be able to make a dial for whatever latitude you like. Students will be drawing the dials themselves so you will need to bring paper and a board to draw on, a drawing compass, protractor, straight edge, pencil and eraser. I will bring some extra protractors and compasses.

The psychology and practical application of being a competitive fighter. Explore personally those things that will help you understand it is good to compete, good to win and excellent to have fun doing so. We are engaged in a martial sport; how do we exploit what makes us effective and how to integrate those concepts into a primarily social organization.

You may have seen the shenanigans of commedia characters on stage, but have you ever met the characters behind the mischief? Join Lady Avelina del Dolce and members of Northern Atlantian commedia troupe, "Vagando Stolti" as they teach a class about the characters of commedia dell'arte by becoming the stock characters themselves. This is an interactive class for members of any experience level, interest level or age. Join us for an hour of fun, foolish times!

"Exchequer 101 and 201 are required for being a warranted exchequer and deputy exchequer. This course offers the basics and some tips on how to correctly record items on the report and to make your reports easier to do. There will be a review of the differences between the reports used for SCA Inc. and the MD subsidiary. There will be time afterwards for questions. - Prerequisite: Exchequer 101"

An embroidery class that goes beyond the basics. In this class we will talk about variations of both the herringbone and buttonhole (or blanket) stitches - common stitches used for seam treatments. At the end of this hands-on class, you will have your own sampler of these stitch variations. Please bring your own scissors if you have them.

Hands-on class that will teach some of the basic stitches used in Reticella. We will start out learning "Punto en Aria" (detached lace) and progress to "Punto Tagliato" (cutwork) as time permits. A basic knowledge of embroidery is required as well as decent eyesight and/or reading glasses. Bring your embroidery scissors if you have them. All other supplies will be provided.

A discussion on the styles and trends from the 1490's to the end of the SCA period with some hints and techniques to create your own Venetian garb.

This class will teach students the basic philosophy, some history, and the fundamental processes in creating alcoholic beverages using honey to make mead. Theory and practices learned here can easily translate into making other mediums such as wine, beer, and hard sodas or ciders. This is a hands-on class involving students to mix, measure, observe, and be involved in the mead making process.

Principal's responsibilities and working with the Order, the ESP system and the Crowns. Whether you are a present or past Order Principal, or you simply wish to find out how polling orders work before considering throwing your hat in the ring, this class is for you. Everyone is welcome.

Combat Archery class, required for all CA marshals.

In 1517 a German visiting Italy sent a letter home about some of the dances he witnessed there. This letter provides us an interesting view of what the dance tradition started by Master Domenico da Piacenza had evolved into in the early 16th century. Come learn the variants of Leoncello, Amoroso and Angelosa found in this letter, as well the dance Vite de Colei only found therein. Familiarity with 15th century Italian dance steps may help, but is not required.

You have researched and planned a banquet fit for kings! You are ready any number happy feast-goers. You have thought of everything... right? This class is designed to discuss staffing of the modern medieval kitchen from a practical point of view. Head cooks of the day had any number of workers assisting them in various tasks. In our volunteer-run modern medieval kitchens this is not always the case. Join us as we look into the staffing of our kitchens both then and now.

An introduction to casting higher temperature metals (brass, bronze, etc.) using sand casting, including safety, mold making, pouring and cleanup.

One of the mistakes people make in going to events is not planning for lunch or snacks during the day. That can result in being really hungry and out of sorts by the time the feast is being served. This class will help you figure out how to bring lunch with you *without* resorting to peanut butter and jelly; we'll talk about recipes to fill your lunch basket if you cook, and even about what you can get straight from the grocery store if you don't want to cook that will still give you a more medieval experience.

Ever want to make a scroll special for the recipient but didn't want to do something so modern that it doesn't look like it came out of a manuscript or even out of history? In this class students will learn techniques to create scrolls that will have a personalized touch without losing the period aspects. We will touch on how to come up with ideas for personalization and decide what elements to add/subtract

Intended to give people thinking (dreaming?) about acquiring a harp and learning to play, information about the likely costs of an instrument, level of music skill needed, some sources for harps and lessons, as well as the chance to hear me play and for them to try playing harps of different sizes and costs.

Fiore Di Liberi's 1409 manuscript describes a complete combat system. His approach of "Do A", if your opponent "does B" then "Do C" or if your opponent "does D" then "do E" can be accurately represented as a modern decision tree. This class will build on the groundwork of basic techniques from the Intro to Fiore class and dive into the depths of the logic of the combat system by exploring two decision trees completely. Students are encouraged to bring an appropriate rattan, metal, or waster longsword. The instructor will have a few extra available for use.

Improvisation skills can improve anyone’s portrayal of their persona, execution of court shtick, and everyday conversations. Not just for the period theater art of commedia dell’ arte, improvisation skills can benefit everyone. This class will teach basic improv skills through group and solo theater games. Sophia the Orange has been trained by the Washington Improv Theater in Washington DC, the most advanced commedia teachers in the SCA, and practiced improv for 16+ years. All students are guaranteed to pick up something useful in this class.

The single sword versus weapons styles. Will discuss and work details of defeating disparate styles while only singly armed, The True Choice of Arming Amongst Those of Honor.

Learn the proper way to make combat archery ammo in Atlantia. Discussion of the do and the do not. Demonstration of proper techniques to construct a legal bolt or arrow.

Letter writing was the primary form of communication in period, but is a neglected art today. Rediscover the beauty and fun of letter-writing, from period sources. We'll look at the art of writing a proper letter, famous correspondence, and examples of everyday letters sent by people all across society. Plus, plenty of tips for writing your own letters!

We will discuss how to plant and grow varieties of roses that were grown in period. I will cover where to find period varieties, how to plant and care for them, what to do about pests (both insect and diseases), and, if there is time, propagating rose plants.

Are you interested in making late period Japanese garb? It's comfy, colorful, and completely functional for unexpected battles with your rivals. We'll discuss patterning for casual daily wear, and pieces you can add for wearing your garb under armor for heavy fighting, as armor for rapier, and to hold your sleeve back for archery. We'll also discuss some of the major differences in styles between pre-1600 Japanese garb and post-1600 garb. The patterns we will cover are appropriate for men, women, and children of the Samurai caste.

A short history of where blackwork came from followed by how to stitch it

Dealing with the Real World Issues in our Imaginary one. How to balance the official and the mundane: A class for officers in the SCA. What should an officer write in a newsletter or report, how to deal with online etiquette, etc? This is a cross discipline class for any officer.

This class explores the use of magic during the Middle Ages. We will examine the types of magic used, for what reasons and by who.

Dance is fun! Come learn easy and popular English country dances done all across Atlantia and the SCA in general. This class is great for absolute beginners and experts alike. Everyone's favorite dances including Gathering Peascods, Black Nag, and more will be done! You do not need anything special in order to attend. No special shoes, no partner, and no previous experience needed. Just a desire to learn something new and have some fun!

Students will learn about, learn and practice the major embroidery stitch from the Bayeux Tapestry, Laid and Couched Work. Students will be provided with color handout ($1), hoop ($2), linen ($0.50), needle ($0.06), and wool yarn ($1.25). Scissors and yarn threaders will be available for use during class. Youth are welcome and can earn Page credit.

"An examination of period feast/banquet arrangement, starting with Greek Dietetics, and concluding with ""Le Menagier de Paris."" We will talk about what foods went where during the meal, and the reasoning behind the placement. We'll look at several period banquet menus, and break them down based on period concepts."

Come learn about how the Landsknecht soldiers and their Tossfrau companions dressed in the 16th century. The teacher will have samples of her own clothing for review.

Need to do an armigerous scroll? This class shows how not to drive yourself crazy adding devices to scrolls and all of the many awards the recipient may have or is receiving. Learn why there are extra elements to heraldry, who gets what on their scrolls, what those elements are, when they are used, where to place them, and how to incorporate awards without overwhelming an illumination.

This class will discuss strategies to help a fighter successfully study period manuals as well as common pitfalls to avoid. We will cover some of the many resources available and discuss the merits of each. Finally, we will walk through some sample plates and how you might successfully study and learn the described actions. Swords and gloves requested but not required.

This class is for both performers and the event staff that wants to work with them. When event staff wants to get music, dance, shtick, or other performing arts into their event, there are precautions you need to take to ensure the final performance is what you want. When performers want time and space from event staff to enjoy their art at SCA events, there are precautions you need to take to ensure the final performance is what you want. I’ve performed music, dance, theater, and misc schtick for over 20 years in the SCA including running the Performing Arts Program at the SCA 50 Year Event, and I’ll share how performers can work with SCA event staff to get spotlight time in a way that serves the whole event instead of just one’s ego. Performers of all levels can serve kings, autocrats, the populace, and the SCA mission as well as their own artistic calling with a few precautions.

"Ever seen a chair, chest or other cool piece of medieval workmanship and really wanted to make it, but didn’t know where to start? This class will walk you through several methods used to take a picture, painting, or woodcut and make your own furniture. We’ll discuss drafting methods using vanishing points, museum sketches, and the empirical method*. Included will be discussions of the differences in modern standard sizing and period furniture and woodwork. If we have time, we’ll discuss projects that you want to start on or are struggling with, so bring a picture of the piece. *Empirical method trademark pending a review by a review board of some sort, probably with a bunch of serious looking types."

Extant shirts and smocks from the 16th century are often decorated with embroidery. Many of these items also had open work or insertion seams as another decorative element. This class will show you 3 different open work seams and how to sew them. Class includes a handout and kit to practice the seams.

Look at the history of archery in Japan, from the early times to the end of period. Discussion of the material used in bows, arrows and arrowheads. Examples of bow, arrows and actual antique arrowheads will be available.

Ever wonder how to do the interweaving designs? This is a beginner class and no artistic ability is necessary.

Students will learn a fingerloop pattern that braids two thin cords simultaneously. We will then explore variations on the pattern to create a single, thicker cord and a "buttonhole" cord. Prior working knowledge of basic fingerloop techniques is helpful.

This course focuses on what we do (and do not) know about sports-based concussions, and how that relates to fighting in the SCA. We'll talk about diagnosis, contributing/risk factors, and treatment and recovery. This course is intended for both rattan/heavy and rapier fighters; some portions may also be relevant to youth fighters and their parents.

What Reversible blackwork was used for and how it is accomplished. Attendees will design a pattern of their own. Possible subjects for such a design are heraldry.

The intent of this class is to provide a basic level of information for a person interested in understanding and developing a Khazar persona. It will cover a little history, clothing and lifestyle. It is taught as an introduction and will also provide source and reference material for interested parties. The Khazars rose to power in the 6th CE and remained a force until the 12thCE. At the height of their power, 48 nation states paid tribute to the Khazars including Byzantines, Vikings, Magyars and Turks. Khazars were on the throne of Byzantium on two occasions. A great deal of controversy surrounds the Khazars due to the 8th CE conversion of nobility to Judaism and the forms of government, law and warfare practiced.

This class will be an introduction in commentary in OSCAR at the kingdom level.In the class, we will discuss what is considered helpful commentary and we will review submission currently in progress and comment on them.

This course presents an overview of period techniques used to hide sensitive information. We will cover a variety of ciphers and encoding techniques, with examples, and historical context. Materials are provided.

There are many fantastic day-trip only events that require the use of Hotel space. As a hotel professional in the modern world, I have designed this class as an overview of what to think about when researching and requesting a hotel group block for your event and can offer insight on from the Lodging Industry end. We will also discuss Complimentary Room Policies, Hospitality Suites and the use/rental of meeting spaces.

Students will learn and practice creating a scroll with a vine and flower border. Students will be provided with color handout ($1), a prepared scroll paper ($0.50) and a mechanical pencil ($0.55). Paint and brushes will be available for use during class, if we get that far. Youth are welcome and can earn Page credit.

An introduction to pre-12th century music theory based on the surviving treatises. If you are interested in creating accompaniments for early melodies, or want to compose original material in an early period style, this class will help.

A beginner's or remedial class on Gothic Textura Calligraphy. Examples will be shown, basic stroke and construction, and a marker to practice with.

Or ""one guard to rule them all"". This class will be focused on using Giganti and Italian rapier as a framework to explain the most important part to winning a fight, which is not losing. You don't have to be a student of any particular style to get something out of this class. What I will cover will be widely applicable to anyone that fights heavy rapier or cut and thrust. Come learn how to survive in a fight. Swords and gloves requested but not required.
